Nigeria Under-20 team coach Abdullahi Maikaba has chosen Chelsea’s 17-year-old striker Abdulmuiz Adeleke to lead the team’s attack in the WAFU B tournament, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Maikaba finalized his team for the tournament during the week, ending a process that saw more than 100 players lobby to make the team for the tournament in Ivory Coast.
Muiz, who rose to prominence in the WAFU B under-17 tournament two years ago, was chosen to lead the team’s attack. He is due to join Chelsea when he turns 18.
In the U17 tournament he scored a brace in a 3-0 win over Togo and followed up with another brace in the third-place playoff against Ghana, finishing the tournament with four goals despite Nigeria failing to secure a ticket to the U17 AFCON.
He will hope to replicate or improve on his performance when the U20 tournament begins. The Nigerian team will leave for the Ivorian city of Abidjan on July 20 in their bid to reach the AFCON U20 through the tournament, which serves as a qualifier.
It will be played between July 26 and August 9 between 8 teams. Nigeria has won the last two editions of the tournament under coach Ladan Bosso and Aliyu Zubairu.
Maikaba will try to match their feat, but the most important thing is to qualify for the AFCON, which is the main objective of the tournament.
