Belgium advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals with a resounding 4-1 victory over the United States, ending the Americans’ campaign and completing the elimination of all three co-hosts from the tournament.
Charles De Ketelaere starred in a brace as Belgium dominated for long periods, while Hans Vanaken and substitute Romelu Lukaku also found the net to secure a comfortable victory. The United States briefly tied it through Malik Tillman after his free kick was deflected by Vanaken, but Belgium quickly regained control and never looked back.
The Red Devils scored in the ninth minute when Nicolas Raskin crossed the goal for De Ketelaere to score. Tillman’s lucky equalizer in the 31st minute gave the hosts hope, but De Ketelaere restored Belgium’s lead just two minutes later by heading in Leandro Trossard’s cross.
Belgium effectively sealed the match after the break when De Ketelaere dispossessed hesitant goalkeeper Matt Freese, allowing Vanaken to roll into the empty net from outside the box. Lukaku completed the rout in added time with a calm finish from a tight angle.
The defeat ended a disappointing night for the United States despite Folarin Balogun returning to the starting lineup after his one-match ban was suspended by FIFA. The striker, who came into the match with three goals in the tournament, was largely isolated as Belgium controlled the match.
Belgium will now face European champions Spain in a blockbuster World Cup quarter-final match in Los Angeles after La Roja beat Portugal 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals.
