Iheanacho urged to stay at Celtic for Champions League glory

Former Hearts star Juwon Oshaniwa advises the Super Eagles striker to sign a new contract after an impressive title-winning season.

Celtic fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Kelechi Iheanacho faces strong calls to commit his future to the Scottish champions.

The 29-year-old Nigerian striker, who joined Celtic on a one-year free transfer from Sevilla, is weighing up his options after the club failed to agree a contract extension at the end of last season.

While links with Bursaspor and other suitors continue, the striker is reportedly considering a bigger project, but a former Nigerian defender believes staying at Celtic is the smartest decision.

Oshaniwa: “Iheanacho can write his name in Celtic tradition”

Juwon Oshaniwa, who spent two seasons in the Scottish Premiership with Hearts, has publicly urged Iheanacho to extend his stay in Glasgow.

Speaking exclusively to Brila.net, the former Super Eagles left-back highlighted the stature of the club and the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

“When it comes to talent, Iheanacho is up there and we cannot deny the fact that Celtic are a great team; season after season they are in the Champions League,” Oshaniwa said.

After a start disrupted by injuries, the striker finished the campaign with 9 goals and 1 assist in 24 appearances, playing a key role as Celtic clinched the domestic double, lifting both the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish FA Cup.

Why staying makes sense

Oshaniwa believes Iheanacho has already started to build his legacy at Celtic and should build on it.

“For him to win the double with the team last season, he is already writing his chapter in the history of Celtic legends,” he continued. “So if the club really wants him to stay, why reject the offer? Why reject the opportunity to return to the Champions League with that team and they also have a good coach?

“It will be wise for him to stay back and enjoy the race with them for one more season.”

With Celtic having the option to extend his contract for a further year, negotiations could resume as the transfer window heats up.

While interest from Türkiye and Brazil remains, Oshaniwa’s advice underlines the stability, trophies and European platform Celtic offer the talented Super Eagles striker.

Iheanacho’s next decision could define the next phase of his career – whether he seeks new adventures abroad or continues to build his legacy in Glasgow.
