Glasgow 2026: Weightlifter Idris wins Team Nigeria’s third gold medal

Riluwan Idris won Team Nigeria’s third gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, claiming the men’s heavyweight weightlifting title with a massive lift of 208kg in Glasgow on Friday.

Competing with a bodyweight of just 86kg, Idris scored 132.8 points to edge out England’s Matthew Harding, who lifted 199kg to score 131.0 points and take Silver.

Nicodemus Moses of Malaysia completed the podium with 120.3 points to win bronze.

Meanwhile, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Rita Ferdinand were unstoppable in women’s heavyweight powerlifting, breaking world records to win gold and silver medals respectively for Nigeria.

Idris’ feat means Team Nigeria won six medals on the first day of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games alone.
