The Osun State Election Violence Victims Relief Committee has commenced review and verification of over 300 complaints received from individuals allegedly affected by the violence related to the August 15 governorship election.
Following the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as the winner of the election, he inaugurated a 10-member committee to verify claims and supervise the distribution of the state government’s $500 million relief endowment fund.
At the beginning of the verification and cross-examination exercise on Thursday, the President of the Assembly and President of the Commission, the Hon. Adewale Egbedun, stressed that careful consideration is needed to ensure that support reaches those who have actually suffered losses.
Egbedun reassured the complainants that the committee will operate with fairness, transparency and compassion, arguing that each account will be assessed objectively using the evidence presented.
It also appealed to the applicants to fully cooperate, requesting accurate information and relevant supporting documents.
“On behalf of the committee, I assure all genuine victims that their cases will receive the attention they deserve.
“We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the relief process is credible, fair and meaningful,” Egbedun said.
Speaking before the committee at the state House of Assembly, emotional testimony was heard from Ajayi Tolulope, whose husband, Ajayi Rogba, was killed in Esa-Oke, Obokun Local Government Area, ahead of the elections.
“We saw a Sienna with two occupants, each with two guns. They fired four shots.
“Rogba was wearing an Accord Party cap that day. We have five children in our care: two are mine, one belongs to his second wife and two belong to his younger brothers. He was a practicing herbalist, his parents survived him,” Tolulope said.
She further alleged that her late husband had been repeatedly persecuted after he rejected an invitation to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
