Paris Saint-Germain emerged as leaders of the UEFA Champions League league stage after three rounds of matches, while Manchester United dropped to 21st place following a 4-1 defeat to Como in Italy.
The reigning champions lead the 36-team table with nine points and a goal difference of plus-nine, ahead of Aston Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Real Betis, who have also won all three of their opening games. Project reports
The conclusion of matchday three on Wednesday 21 October produced significant changes in the standings, with Real Madrid beating RB Leipzig 4-1, Aston Villa overcoming Viking 3-1 and Arsenal drawing 2-2 against Bayern Munich.
Elsewhere, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored as Galatasaray defeated his former club Lille 4-2, while Manchester United suffered another damaging defeat that left them with three points from three games.
The ranking shows a clear gap between teams gaining early momentum and those already under pressure to improve their results. With five rounds left in the league stage, however, there is still plenty of room for movement before qualification for the knockout stage is decided.
PSG, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Real Madrid dictate the pace
PSG sit top with nine points from three wins, having scored 14 goals and conceded five. Their attacking performance gives them the best goal difference among the teams with maximum points.
Aston Villa is second, also with nine points, with 12 goals scored and three conceded. The 3-1 win over Viking on Wednesday maintained their perfect record and solidified their position among the pacesetter.
Liverpool are third after beating Villarreal 4-3 in a seven-goal match. The English club has scored 12 goals and conceded seven, with a goal difference of plus five.
Real Madrid are in fourth place after their 4-1 win over RB Leipzig. The Spanish giants also picked up nine points, scoring 10 goals and conceding five.
Real Betis completes the top five with nine points. The 1-0 win over Feyenoord secured a third consecutive victory, although their goal difference of plus three leaves them behind the four clubs above them.
So far the five teams have differentiated themselves from the rest of the competition by winning every match. Their continued success in the remaining matches could put them in a strong position to secure direct qualification to the round of 16.
Stuttgart and Arsenal remain unbeaten
VfB Stuttgart sits in sixth place with seven points from two wins and a draw. They have scored seven goals and conceded two, with a goal difference of plus five.
Arsenal are seventh, also with seven points, after a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in Germany. The Gunners had won their first two games before being stopped by the German champions.
Arsenal scored six goals and conceded two, leaving them with a goal difference of plus-four. Their ability to earn a point at Bayern keeps them within reach of the leading group.
Barcelona sits in eighth place with six points after losing 4-2 to PSG on Tuesday. The Spanish club had won their first two matches but had failed to maintain their perfect record in Paris.
Despite the defeat, Barcelona remain in the automatic qualification places, although their position could change significantly in the next round of matches.
Como grows while Manchester City and Club Brugge remain in contention
Como is ninth with six points after the clear victory over Manchester United. The Italian team scored 10 goals and conceded five, with a goal difference of plus five.
Manchester City are 10th, also with six points, after beating AEK Athens 5-1. The result was a strong response following their previous defeat to PSG and kept them firmly in contention for a place in the top eight.
Club Brugge are in 11th place after beating Lens 3-0, while Sporting CP are 12th with six points despite a 3-2 home defeat to LASK.
Borussia Dortmund completes the group of teams with six points in 13th place. The German club beat Sabah 2-1 on Tuesday to record their second win of the season.
The six-point group of clubs leaves the race for the top eight open. A single win or loss in the next round could substantially alter the positions of several teams.
Bayern Munich occupies 14th position
Bayern Munich are 14th with five points after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal. The German team recorded one win and two draws, remaining undefeated but falling behind clubs with stronger winning records.
Bayern have scored 10 goals and conceded five, with a goal difference of plus five. Their position illustrates the importance of converting draws into wins in the league stage format.
Roma are 15th with four points after the 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Atlético Madrid follows in 16th place, also on four points, after drawing 1-1 with Stuttgart.
Shakhtar Donetsk sits in 17th place with four points, despite losing 1-0 to Inter on Wednesday. PSV Eindhoven are 18th, also with four points, after beating Porto 1-0.
These clubs remain in the qualifying positions, but their positions leave little room for complacency as the league stage progresses.
Manchester United drops to 21st place after the defeat of Como
Manchester United are 21st with three points from three games, having won once and lost twice.
The 4-1 defeat against Como was particularly damaging because it followed a 2-0 defeat against Atlético Madrid. United had opened the season with a 4-0 win over Sabah, but back-to-back defeats have pushed them into the bottom half of the table.
They scored five goals and conceded six, leaving them with a goal difference of minus one.
While 21st place remains in the bracket of teams that would qualify for the knockout play-offs if the league stage ended now, United cannot afford many more setbacks. Finishing between ninth and 24th would mean playing a play-off rather than qualifying directly for the round of 16.
Inter are twentieth with three points after the 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk. Villarreal are 19th, also with three points, despite the 4-3 defeat against Liverpool.
Napoli are in 22nd place after losing 4-3 to Bodø/Glimt, while Galatasaray are 23rd after their win over Lille. LASK completes the current top 24 after a surprising 3-2 away win against Sporting CP.
The positions of these teams underline how tight the middle of the table has become. With five rounds remaining, United still have an opportunity to recover, but the next few games will be crucial to their hopes of avoiding further pressure.
Three clubs remain without points
At the bottom of the table, Porto, Lille and Slovan Bratislava have lost all three of their opening games and remain without points.
Porto are 34th after defeats against Manchester City, Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven. Lille occupies 35th position after defeats against Real Betis, Arsenal and Galatasaray.
Slovan Bratislava are 36th, having conceded 13 goals and scored just once. The 4-0 defeat against Roma on Tuesday prolonged a difficult start to the competition.
These three clubs face the increasingly urgent task of picking up points if they are to get out of the elimination zone. Under the current format, teams finishing 25th to 36th at the end of the league stage are eliminated from the competition.
How the Champions League qualifying format works
The 2026/2027 Champions League involves the participation of 36 clubs in a single championship phase. Each team faces eight different opponents and the final ranking will determine qualification for the knockout phase.
The best eight teams at the end of the group stage advance directly to the round of 16.
Clubs finishing ninth to 24th advance to the knockout play-offs, with the winners joining the top eight in the round of 16.
Teams finishing between 25th and 36th place are eliminated and are not transferred to another UEFA competition.
With only three of the eight rounds of the league stage completed, the current standings are an early indicator of performance rather than a final verdict on any club’s European season.
The fourth day could reshape the ranking
The fourth round is scheduled for November 3 and 4. Manchester United will host Roma, while Arsenal will face Slavia Prague. Real Madrid will visit AEK Athens, Liverpool will face Fenerbahçe away and Manchester City will travel to Leipzig.
Aston Villa faces Barcelona in one of the most significant matches of the round, while Bayern Munich travel to Atlético Madrid. PSG visits Villarreal and Galatasaray hosts Stuttgart.
These matches could further separate the leading teams from the chasing pack, but the format of the championship stage leaves room for substantial changes. For United, the visit of Roma offers an opportunity to respond to recent defeats and improve their position. For PSG, Villa, Liverpool, Madrid and Betis the challenge is to maintain the winning momentum that has taken them to the top of the table.
