US President Donald Trump said Canada is “eager to reach a deal with the US” and suggested it could be reached “soon” if Ottawa addresses its concerns about agricultural trade.
Trump made the comments Saturday in Ireland, where he was asked if he was considering withdrawing from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
“No, we’re fine. We’re going to have a good relationship with Mexico,” Trump said.
He then turned his attention to Canada, saying the two countries had a good relationship while repeating his criticism of the trade relationship.
“We actually have a good relationship with Canada, but the United States has been cheated by Canada for 50 years,” Trump said.
“We don’t need their product and they need our product. They do almost all their business with us and we do very little with them.”

Trump said Canada was “eager to make a deal,” but said he wasn’t sure Ottawa was ready.
The US president later compared Canada’s desire to reach a deal with Iran’s.
“I hope Canada appreciates the same attitude as Iran,” Trump said. “It’s very interesting – Canada and Iran.”
“Canada wants to make a deal and Iran wants to make a deal. At the right time, both of those things can happen.”
Trump said agricultural trade remains one of his concerns, and repeated his criticism of Canada’s tariffs on some US agricultural products.
“Canada has to treat our farmers better and they can’t impose tariffs on our farmers,” he said.
“When those things are gone, and they’re willing to take it all away, you’ll probably see a deal with Canada soon.”
Trump’s comments came during a weekend visit to Ireland, where he also considered the politically sensitive question of Irish reunification.
Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump said he “would love to see” the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland united.
“I don’t want to cause trouble, but I want to see it come together,” Trump said. “Eventually it will happen. It might as well happen now.”
