Friends, family and loved ones of 37-year-old Rebecca Wilson gathered outside the Regina Legislative Building on Friday evening to remember and honor her life.
Wilson, known as ‘Becca’ or ‘Becky’ by those who knew her, was described by her family as a devoted older sister, a woman of faith and someone of strong character. Her sister, Katie Wilson, said Rebecca was a creative person who spent much of her time painting and writing.
“As his sister, there is a huge gap right now and I will never be able to fill it in the same way,” said Katie Wilson. “It will never be the same.”
The family took turns talking about Rebecca Wilson, describing her as funny, loyal and a great loss to the family. Wilson said the circumstances surrounding the death make the loss even more difficult.

“He didn’t just die. He didn’t just die from an illness or anything or some freak accident. He was murdered,” Wilson said.
The police are investigating it.
Rebecca Wilson’s mother, Wendy Lerat Lynn, said Wilson, who was the oldest of five children, always had the nature of advocating for others.
“She took on the role of big sister,” he said. “He does that on the playground too with other kids. That’s just the way he is.”
Lerat said her daughter’s laugh was contagious and wants people to remember Wilson as the loyal, funny and wonderful human being she was.
“The way he ended it, it didn’t do him justice at all,” Lerat said.
Signs at the event called for justice for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Lerat said what happened to her daughter was not an isolated incident.
“I understand there are different levels and understandings regarding the killing and disappearance of indigenous women,” Lerat said. “The more people start talking about it, maybe it will become something people actually look at.”
Rebecca Wilson was the victim of an aggravated assault on August 14. He was found in an alley in the 1400 block of Wascana Road and died of his injuries on Aug. 30.
“There needs to be another effort to address why these women were killed,” Lerat said.
No arrests have been made in Wilson’s death.
“Our family will not stop, I will not stop. My mission is to find the truth for my sister, we will find out the truth. The truth will come out, it’s just a matter of when,” Wilson said.
