Former Nigerian Under-17 striker Umar Abubakar has for the first time received an invitation to the Nigeria senior team for the upcoming friendly match against Russia on October 6, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
As we exclusively reported, the head coach of the Nigerian team, Eric Chelle, will use most of the players he intends to use in his role as under-23 coach for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers in Los Angeles.
They will be joined by some players from the Nigerian senior team, who will be part of the squad for the AFCON qualification matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau respectively.
Abubakar and two other players, Peter Edokpolor of Benfica B and Abdullahi Umar of Hradec Kralove of the Czech Republic, will fight for a starting spot in the team’s attack.
Chelle aims to qualify Nigeria for the Olympics for the first time since 2016 after missing the last two consecutive editions. They begin the campaign to qualify in November.
