JAMB clarifies the meaning of ‘not accepted’, ‘admission in progress’ in CAPS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified the various admission statuses that candidates may face in the Central Admission Processing System, CAPS.

The board explained the meaning of “Not Accepted”, “Acceptance In Progress” and “Acknowledged” in an explanatory video released on Thursday.

JAMB also urges candidates awaiting admission to monitor their CAPS profiles regularly as their status may change as the institution’s admission process is completed.

Addressing the “Not Accepted” status, the Board explains that this does not mean the end of a candidate’s admission prospects.

JAMB says, “This means you have not been offered admission. However, it does not mean you will not be accepted.”

Therefore, candidates whose CAPS continues to display “Not Accepted” are advised to remain patient and continue checking the platform for possible changes.

The Board explained that “Admission In Progress” generally indicates that an institution has begun the process of offering admission to a candidate, but the necessary approvals have not been completed.

JAMB says, “This means your institution’s admissions officer has recommended you for admission, but is awaiting the recommendation of the head of the institution.”

The board noted that the same status can also be displayed after the head of the institution recommends a candidate, where the admission proposal is still pending JAMB’s final decision.

JAMB however warns candidates not to interpret “Admissions In Progress” as confirmation that they have secured a place.

The board emphasized, “Please note that ‘Admission In Progress’ does not imply automatic acceptance.”

It was explained that even after an institution recommends a candidate, JAMB can still reject the offer if the candidate does not meet the relevant admission requirements.

JAMB states, “This is because a recommended offer can still be rejected by the Board if you do not meet the prerequisite requirements.”

According to the Board, “Accepted” status is only achieved after JAMB officially approves the admission recommended by the institution.

Explaining the final stage, JAMB said, “This is where you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED REGISTRATION’.”

Candidates who receive a formal offer of admission through CAPS will then have the option to accept or decline the offer on the platform.

The Board further explained that admission status should not be considered permanent until the process is complete.

JAMB says, “Remember, your CAPS status will continue to change as the admission process continues until the final stage when you print your admission letter,”

Therefore, the Board advises candidates to continuously monitor their CAPS accounts and obtain admission related information only through its official communication channels.
