Chinese technology company Huawei has launched new artificial intelligence computing technology as demand for more powerful systems capable of supporting advanced AI rises globally.
The company announced its new technology on September 18, 2026, as companies and governments increasingly invest in artificial intelligence and the infrastructure needed to develop and operate advanced AI systems.
Huawei’s new infrastructure is designed to provide greater computing capacity for increasingly sophisticated AI models. The company highlights its Atlas 960E SuperPoD, which can scale to thousands of neural processing units and is designed for large-scale AI computing.
These developments reflect the growing importance of specialized computer chips and data center infrastructure in the AI industry. As AI systems become more capable, they require significant computing power to train models and process information.
Huawei’s announcement comes at a time when technology companies around the world are racing to develop AI chips, computers and infrastructure. A new GSMA report warns that rising smartphone prices could make it harder for low-income people to benefit from the next generation of AI-powered services. The organization says affordability remains a major obstacle to mobile internet adoption in many developing countries.
This issue is particularly important for Africa, as smartphone affordability remains an important factor in internet access. According to the report, the cost of a mobile phone capable of accessing the internet for the poorest 20 percent of people in low- and middle-income countries was equivalent to 44 percent of average monthly income at the end of last year. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the figures are even higher.
