El-Rufai: I have no resentment towards those who abandoned me

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he has no hatred or resentment towards former associates, friends and family who have chosen to remain silent or distance themselves from him in his current circumstances.

El-Rufai, a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, made the revelation in a statement titled “My Relationships and Consequences”, which he posted on his X account on Wednesday.

The former governor said recent experiences have forced him to reflect on some of his relationships, particularly the responses of people he had previously supported when circumstances were difficult.

According to him, his support of individuals and causes over the years has been guided by his Islamic faith, Arewa education, personal values ​​and conscience, rather than expectations of gratitude, recognition or mutual support.

“Over the years I have stood alongside the people and causes I believed in, sometimes in difficult circumstances and at considerable personal cost.

“I did it not in expectation of praise, gratitude or reciprocity, but because I believed it was right,” he said.

El-Rufai said he recognized that the people he supported had the right to make their own decisions about how to respond to the current circumstances.

He noted that while some may speak out in support of him, others may choose silence, while some may distance themselves from relationships they had previously maintained.

“Those I supported are free to make their own choices now that the circumstances are reversed. Some may speak; others may remain silent. Others may even deny our relationship or try to rewrite history,” he said.

He added that he did not mean to judge those people simply because their reactions were different from what he or others might have expected.

“Their reasons are their own, and I don’t want to judge them simply because their response is different than what others — or even I — might have expected,” the former governor said.

Reflecting on the effects of adversity on human relationships, El-Rufai said his recent experience provided an opportunity to understand some relationships more clearly.

“Adversity has a way of brightening relationships,” he said.

He added that the experience might lead him to reconsider the nature of some relationships and the expectations of people who look up to him.

However, El-Rufai stressed that such reflection should not be interpreted as an attack or condemnation of those involved.

“This is neither a reproach nor a condemnation; it is simply part of seeing people and life more clearly,” he said.

The former governor said he had no regrets about supporting people or causes whenever he believed doing so was the right thing to do.

He said the actions of others would not cause him to abandon the principles that had guided his decisions.

“I have no regrets about supporting people or causes when I believed it was right to do so, and I have no resentment towards anyone who chooses not to do the same for me,” El-Rufai said.

On what he described as possible injustice, ingratitude or slight against him, El-Rufai said he will not pursue revenge or punishment.

He instead appealed to his faith, saying the ultimate responsibility rests with Almighty Allah.

“Regarding any injustice, ingratitude or hurt done to me, I seek neither revenge nor punishment. The ultimate responsibility belongs to Almighty Allah, and I leave that judgment to Him, in this world and in the Hereafter,” he said.

The former governor said his main concern was remaining at peace with his conscience and his relationship with God.

“In the end, each of us must live with the choices we make, and posterity will pass whatever verdict they see fit.

“My only concern is to remain at peace with my conscience and, above all, with Almighty Allah,” he concluded.
