Dimeji Lawal criticizes the lack of creativity in the Super Eagles’ performance against Guinea-Bissau

Former international winger Mohammed Oladimeji Lawal criticized the Super Eagles for what he called their lack of creativity in Tuesday’s 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau in their second match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Sports247 reports.

Lawal, who rose to prominence in the Golden Eaglets’ silver-winning team at the 1987 FIFA U-17 World Cup Canada and played for Spain’s Real Madrid B at the height of his career, lamented that the Eagles were unable to create any scoring opportunities.

Goals from Franculino Dju, Mama Balde and Alvaro Djalo enabled the Wild Dogs to achieve a highly unlikely result at Bissau’s September 24 Stadium, much to Lawal’s dismay as the defeat left Nigeria three points behind their hosts after two matches.

However, the former fast winger, who also played for Eruwa’s Femo Scorpions, Lagos’ Julius Berger, Ibadan’s Shooting Stars, Belgium’s KV Kortrijk and South Africa’s Hellenic, expressed confidence in an Eagles revival.

“I’m really disappointed with this result. I expected the team to take the game directly to their hosts, but we allowed them to dominate. We created very few opportunities to threaten their goalkeeper, but that’s not the end of the world.

“There are still a lot of games left to play in the group. So I remain optimistic that the Super Eagles will top the group,” said Lawal, who scored on his senior debut during an AFCON qualifier against Togo in 1990.

Sports247 further reports that Tuesday’s match brought back memories of the last time the Eagles conceded three goals against an African team (12 years ago on September 6, 2014), when they lost 3-2 at home to Congo in a 2015 AFCON qualifier, and subsequently failed to qualify.
