Law officers in Enugu begin 7-day warning strike over pay

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah

Due to poor pay and other accrued benefits, the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Enugu State Chapter, has embarked on a seven-day warning strike.

The disgruntled law officers who went on warning strike on Friday 2 October 2026 is because the government has failed to address their grievances over poor pay and welfare packages.

This is contained in a statement signed by its President, Comrade KP Onyia, and Secretary, Comrade MO Onyeze, released in Enugu on Friday.

According to law officers, the strike followed prolonged efforts to get the government to address what it described as the “plight of law officers” in the state.

The reason that led to the strike, the association underlines, is the request for full harmonization of the salaries of judicial officers with those of magistrates.

They also demand payment of members’ attorney practice fees and annual bar conference dues.

Other demands include the payment and reinstatement of various professional allowances and fees, the full reinstatement and payment, including arrears, of law officers’ transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances.

The statement also indicates that the warning strike, which began at midnight on Friday, will last seven judicial days.

“During the strike, no law officer in the Abuja or Lagos liaison offices, Government House or any ministry, department or agency should be on duty, go to court or visit correctional centres, police stations or other law enforcement agencies to carry out official duties.

“Legal officials should refrain from conducting government business in line with the collective resolution of the association,” the statement read in part.

The association however expressed hope that the seven-day warning strike will give the authorities the opportunity to address outstanding demands and avoid further industrial action.
