Now that the first $1 million of the EURO WATCH Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) sponsorship deal has been released, with each of the 20 NPFL clubs receiving ₦15 million, attention should also be paid to the man credited with bringing the sponsorship deal to the league.
Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye, the former NPFL president who was among the NFF board members who were ousted, deserves recognition for his role in attracting the sponsor to the league.
While the distribution of funds to the 20 clubs is a positive development, it is equally important to recognize the contribution of the administrators whose efforts help secure financial partnerships for Nigerian football.
If Elegbeleye’s role in bringing EURO WATCH on board was established, the relevant football authorities should consider an appropriate form of recognition and compensation for his contribution.
Football administration should not only celebrate the benefits of successful deals; it should also recognize the people whose efforts helped make such agreements possible.
Recognizing such contributions would send a positive message to future administrators that their efforts to secure sponsorships and grow the league will not go unnoticed.
