Portugal: Why I’m angry with Jesus – Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on the controversy that led to his dramatic departure from the Portuguese national team, accusing manager Jorge Jesus of failing to keep his word and revealing that a disagreement over his playing time ultimately triggered his decision to leave the team.

Ronaldo, 41, gave a detailed account of events surrounding Portugal’s latest international retirement, explaining that he had initially considered ending his international career after the 2026 FIFA World Cup but was persuaded to continue by Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença. Project reports

The Al-Nassr striker said he had even prepared a letter to the Portuguese people which he intended to publish when he leaves the national team for good.

However, according to Ronaldo, talks with Proença after the World Cup changed the situation, with the federation president asking him to reconsider his decision to retire.

Ronaldo says he supported Jorge Jesus’ appointment

According to Ronaldo, Proença subsequently asked for his opinion on the appointment of a new national team coach.

The president presented the name of Jorge Jesus, along with other candidates whose identities Ronaldo said were not revealed to him.

Ronaldo said he supported the appointment and was genuinely pleased when Jesus was finally presented as Portugal’s new manager.

The captain explained that he believed Jesus was the right choice for the national team and that the initial results seemed to justify that decision.

The relationship initially appeared positive, with Jesus contacting Ronaldo shortly afterwards to arrange a face-to-face meeting.

Initially the coach had promised Ronaldo a key role

Ronaldo said the meeting took place at the Cidade do Futebol while his club was holding its pre-season training camp there.

According to the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, Jesus told him that he was counting on him and considered his presence fundamental for the national team’s project.

The coach also presented him with a plan for his participation in the upcoming matches.

Ronaldo said Jesus told him he would play the first and last matches of the international window, making three or four changes a game to manage his physical condition.

It was during that conversation that Jesus allegedly proposed that Ronaldo stay in Portugal rather than travel with the team for away games in Norway and Denmark.

The veteran forward said he immediately rejected the proposal.

For Ronaldo, staying behind while his teammates traveled would have been incompatible with his responsibilities as Portugal captain.

He said he didn’t believe it would send the right message for him to stay simply because he wasn’t expected to play in those games.

Jesus, according to Ronaldo, ultimately agreed with his position.

The sporting director of Al-Nassr was present

Ronaldo also revealed that Simão Coutinho, Al-Nassr’s sporting director, was present at the conversation.

Coutinho, according to Ronaldo, had been the person Jesus had reported to throughout the previous season and had been involved in Jesus’ transfer to the Saudi club in 2025.

The revelation is significant because Jesus had already coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr before coaching Portugal.

Ronaldo said that another conversation took place shortly before the start of the national team’s training camp, when Jesus visited his home in Lisbon.

According to the Portugal captain, the discussion took place calmly and the principles agreed during the previous meeting remained unchanged.

Ronaldo played at Alvalade before the controversy with Norway

Ronaldo later played against Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Despite being substituted during the match, he said he accepted the decision without complaint and personally handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes.

His goal, he explained, was for Portugal to win the match.

Ronaldo said at the time he had no reason to believe he was nearing the end of his international career.

The controversy erupted during Portugal’s next match against Norway.

Ronaldo says Jesus promised him 30 minutes

Ronaldo said that on the day of the Norway match, an assistant coach approached him while the team was having lunch and told him that Jesus wanted to talk to him.

To his surprise, the coach asked him if he was fit enough to play 30 minutes.

Ronaldo said he was following a physical recovery program and that he expected not to play against Norway, because the agreed plan was for him to return for the match at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão.

However he accepted the request.

Jesus, according to Ronaldo, then told him to be ready because he would play 30 minutes.

That promise was not kept.

Ronaldo warmed up from the break and waited on the touchline, but in the end the coach decided not to introduce him.

Portugal then beat Norway 2-1, but Ronaldo remained on the bench.

It was this episode that, according to Ronaldo, represented a fundamental breach of trust.

“The coach had not kept his word,” Ronaldo said in his account of the incident.

Jesus had given a different explanation

The incident had already generated controversy before Ronaldo’s statement.

Jesus initially attempted to play down the situation, but later admitted that Ronaldo was angry after being left on the bench despite warming up.

The coach then explained that he had changed his mind during the match and decided not to let Ronaldo in.

Jesus had also stressed that he was the coach and that no player, regardless of his status, would determine his tactical decisions.

That position further intensified the disagreement.

Reports at the time said Ronaldo had left the Portuguese camp shortly afterwards, with the FPF confirming his departure. Reuters reported that his exit came amid growing uncertainty about his relationship with Jesus.

Ronaldo reveals second disagreement

Ronaldo’s latest statement suggests the dispute did not end with his failure to appear against Norway.

According to him, he subsequently met with Jesus and other officials to resolve the disagreement.

He said the coach had taken note of the situation and that there was an understanding on how the episode would be explained publicly.

However, Ronaldo felt that subsequent public comments did not reflect what had been agreed privately.

This, he said, became the final factor in his decision to leave the national team retreat.

His account therefore portrays the dispute not just as frustration at being left on the bench, but as a question of trust and whether an agreement between captain and manager had been respected.

Ronaldo apologizes but doesn’t retire

Despite the dramatic circumstances surrounding his departure, Ronaldo has made it clear that he will not retire from international football.

He apologized to his teammates, fans and the Portuguese people for the way he left the pitch, while accepting that his actions could lead to disciplinary consequences.

At the same time, he insisted that his commitment to representing Portugal remains intact.

Ronaldo said that after serving any punishment deemed appropriate, he will remain available for selection provided he is physically able to contribute to the national team.

This clarification is significant because his decision to leave the pitch had sparked widespread speculation that his international career may be over.

The 41-year-old had already made it clear after the World Cup that he was evaluating his future with Portugal, making the latest dispute particularly sensitive.

A relationship broken at a crucial moment

The dispute has put Jesus under considerable pressure just months into his tenure as Portugal manager.

Jesus replaced Roberto Martínez after Portugal’s disappointing World Cup campaign and was signed partly because of his previous relationship with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr.

Instead of making the transition smoother, that familiarity has now become the focus of the controversy.

Portugal’s victories over Wales and Norway had initially given Jesus a positive start, but the row over Ronaldo has shifted the focus from results to the manager’s management of the team’s biggest star.

Ronaldo’s decision to make his account public also ensures that disagreement will continue to dominate discussion within the national team.

The Portugal captain, however, attempted to draw a distinction between his frustration with the situation and his commitment to his country.

His final message is that he remains willing to serve Portugal, but expects trust, honesty and respect between the national team management and its captain.

For now, the ball is firmly in the FPF’s court as they consider the disciplinary implications of Ronaldo’s departure and whether the relationship between the veteran striker and Jesus can be mended.

What initially appeared to be a disagreement over the presence of a replacement has now turned into a much deeper dispute over promise, authority and trust within the Portuguese national team.
