Los Angeles 2028 Olympics race: Eguavoen says withdrawals will not affect Falcons against Comoros

Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has dismissed fears in some quarters that a series of withdrawals from his original guest list for the 2028 Olympic Women’s Football Tournament qualifying match against Comoros could affect the Super Falcons’ path.

Nigeria will face Comoros in a home-and-away match (both matches will be held at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo, as Comoros lacks a standard football field in their country) on October 9 and 13 respectively, for a place in the third round of the five-round African qualification series.

“It is true that we have several absentees, in particular Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin. However, I have confidence in their replacements, as they also have the quality and experience to contribute significantly to the team’s success against Comoros.

“Everyone has settled in well in camp as we now have a full stadium and our aim is to field a strong and competitive team for both matches.”

Only Belarusian striker Blessing Okpe, a late guest, is still expected at the team’s training camp in Ijebu-Ode.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will lead the charge as the Falcons begin the race for a second consecutive appearance in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, following their participation in the Paris 2024 tournament.

The aggregate victory over Comoros will take the ten-time African champions to the third round, which will be settled in March 2027.

ON THE CAMP: Goalkeeper: Chiamaka Nnadozie, Comfort Erhabor; Cristiana Uzoma. Defenders: Farida Abdulwahab; Sandra Juan; Tumininu Adeshina; Valentina Uroko Gloria Edet; Shukurat Oladipo; Gloria Ogbonna.
