The Super Falcons claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over the Comoros senior women’s team in the first leg of the second round of the 2028 Olympic qualifying series on Friday in Ikenne-Remo.
Although played at home, the match officially served as the first leg in Comoros. Led by interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, the ten-time African champions dominated the match from start to finish. Eguavoen handed a starting spot to immediate under-20 captain Joy Igbokwe, who anchored the midfield to make her senior debut.
Despite controlling the pace from the start, Nigeria struggled to convert their dominance. In the 11th minute, clear attacking combinations unlocked the final third, but Toni Payne’s shot went wide. Payne threatened again in the 26th minute, setting up Rasheedat Ajibade, whose shot hit the crossbar before Glory Ogbona failed to direct the rebound.
The break finally came three minutes after the restart. In the 48th minute, Gift Monday headed a cross into the danger area, allowing Michelle Alozie to break the deadlock with a composed right-footed finish.
Nigeria doubled its lead after one hour. Jennifer Echegini executed a precise corner kick and Uchenna Kanu reacted faster from point-blank range to beat the goalkeeper with a header. The interim coaching team brought fresh air to the game, giving valuable minutes to emerging talents.
Janet Akekoromowei replaced Toni Payne in the 61st minute on her senior international debut, while Suliat Abideen took over for Gift Monday in the 69th minute to earn her first cap. Folashade Ijamilusi later replaced goalscorer Kanu in injury time to see out the final moments.
Comoros, who advanced to this stage after a 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan in the previous round, struggled to cope with the tactical superiority and pressure of the Super Falcons. The second leg will take place in Ikenne on Tuesday next week, with the overall winner advancing to face Morocco in the third round of the five-round African series.
