Musk promises SpaceX stock to every child in the US

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States a share of his rocket company, SpaceX, starting next year.

Musk, described as the world’s richest man, made the announcement Monday through his X account, although he provided no details on how the proposed distribution would work or how the shares would be allocated.

“Next year I will give away one of my SpaceX shares to every child in America,” Musk wrote.

“This will be the first of many,” he added, hinting that the proposed initiative may be followed by further distributions.

The announcement drew attention because of the potential scale of the proposed giveaway, with an estimated 73 million children under the age of 18 living in the United States, according to 2024 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Uncertainty surrounds the proposed giveaway

Despite the announcement, Musk did not say whether the shares will be distributed directly to children, held in trust until they reach adulthood or provided through another arrangement.

Questions also remain regarding eligibility, the total number of actions involved, the value of the proposed distribution and the legal and administrative framework for implementing the plan.

According to Forbes, Musk owns about 38% of SpaceX, the private aerospace company that develops rockets and spacecraft for commercial and government missions.

However, the billionaire did not reveal how much of his stake would go towards the proposed plan or whether the plan would involve newly issued shares or a transfer of his existing holdings.

Until further details are released, the announcement remains a promise rather than a fully explained distribution schedule.

The announcement follows Trump’s promise of cash

Musk’s statement comes after US President Donald Trump reportedly promised last month to give every American adult $5,000 if his Republican Party retains control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

The two announcements have attracted attention because of the proposed benefits for large sectors of the American population, although the plans differ in the structure and form of the proposed benefits.

While Trump’s promise involves a cash payment to adults, Musk’s proposal centers on equity ownership in a private company.

Further details would be needed to establish how the two proposals will be financed and implemented.

SpaceX expands amid major milestones

Musk’s announcement comes as SpaceX continues to attract attention for its role in the global space industry and its ambitions to develop reusable rockets capable of supporting missions to the Moon and Mars.

The company has become a major player in commercial spaceflight through rocket launches, satellite Internet operations and contracts to transport cargo and astronauts.

Its Starship program is central to Musk’s long-term ambition to make human travel to Mars possible. The spacecraft and rocket system is being developed for missions that involve transporting people and cargo beyond Earth.

The proposed giveaway could put SpaceX ownership in the hands of millions of American children if implemented as announced.

However, the practical details of the plan, including how the shares would be distributed and managed, remain secret.
