NFF announces major FIFA opportunities

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has urged qualified Nigerian legal professionals with proven experience in sports law to apply for appointment in the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) lists of pro bono lawyers and disciplinary and ethics prosecutors.

The announcement, issued by the Communications Department of the NFF, follows two FIFA circulars inviting applications and renewals for the positions in view of the publication of the new lists on 1 January 2027.

Interested candidates are required to submit their applications via FIFA’s designated recruitment portal by 30 October 2026, while those requiring further information have been advised to contact the NFF Secretariat for assistance.

The opportunity offers Nigerian legal practitioners with relevant skills the chance to contribute to the judicial processes of international football’s governing body, particularly in the legal representation of individuals who cannot afford advice and investigations into potential breaches of FIFA regulations.

FIFA is looking for lawyers for two distinct roles

According to the NFF, the two categories perform different but complementary functions within FIFA’s judicial framework.

Pro Bono consultants provide legal assistance to eligible individuals who do not have the financial means to defend themselves in proceedings before FIFA’s judicial bodies. Disciplinary and ethics prosecutors, meanwhile, assist in investigations into possible violations of FIFA regulations.

The NFF said FIFA is inviting qualified applicants to apply for inclusion on the two lists, with the process also offering the opportunity for existing members to apply for renewal where applicable.

The distinction between roles is important because while Pro Bono Legal Advisers focus on ensuring access to legal representation for eligible individuals, Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutors support the processes through which possible breaches of football rules are investigated.

For Nigerian players with relevant experience, the appointments could offer the opportunity to apply their legal knowledge within the international football administrative system.

Pro bono advice and access to justice

FIFA introduced its Pro Bono Counsel initiative in 2019 as part of a broader legal assistance framework aimed at protecting the rights of people who do not have sufficient financial resources to defend themselves in proceedings before its judicial bodies.

The system is designed to address the disadvantage that financial constraints can create for individuals facing disciplinary or ethics proceedings.

Under FIFA’s legal assistance framework, eligible individuals can receive assistance which may include the appointment of a pro bono lawyer. Depending on the circumstances and the approval of the relevant FIFA judicial authority, legal assistance may also include relief from certain costs relating to the proceedings and coverage of reasonable travel and accommodation expenses.

FIFA’s judicial bodies include the Disciplinary Commission, the Appeals Commission and the Ethics Commission, which handle matters arising from the organisation’s rules and regulations.

The legal aid framework is intended for individuals rather than football clubs, affiliated associations or other organizations which are not natural persons. Applicants requesting assistance must provide information demonstrating their financial situation and the competent judicial authority determines whether the request is eligible for assistance.

The availability of pro bono legal advisors is therefore an important component of FIFA’s efforts to ensure that eligible individuals can access legal assistance when facing proceedings under its regulatory system.

Role of disciplinary and ethical prosecutors

The second category concerns legal practitioners with knowledge of sports law who can support investigations into potential violations of FIFA rules.

According to the NFF, these individuals are selected by the FIFA Judicial Bodies Secretariat to assist in the necessary investigative processes.

FIFA’s broader judicial framework provides for the investigation and management of potential violations involving football stakeholders, including players, officials, clubs and affiliated associations, depending on the applicable rules and circumstances.

The work of disciplinary and ethics prosecutors is distinct from the role of counsel representing an individual. Their responsibility within the relevant process is to support the investigation of potential violations and the enforcement of FIFA regulations.

The assignments are therefore relevant to the administration of football governance, where the interpretation and application of the rules require legal knowledge and familiarity with the sport’s institutional framework.

Opportunities for Nigerian Sports Law Professionals

The NFF call places particular emphasis on Nigerian lawyers with proven experience in sports law, rather than candidates who rely solely on general legal qualifications.

Sports law encompasses legal and regulatory issues affecting football and other sporting activities, including disciplinary procedures, governance, disputes and the enforcement of competition rules.

FIFA’s judicial processes operate within an international regulatory context, making relevant experience and familiarity with sports-related legal issues important considerations for potential candidates.

The federation encouraged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the tender and submit their applications within the stipulated period. However, applicants should consult the official application requirements to determine the qualifications and supporting information required for their preferred category.

The NFF has not announced any Nigerian candidate selected under the current exercise. The call is an invitation to qualified individuals to apply, with final appointments to be determined through the FIFA process.

Application deadline and procedure

The deadline for submitting applications is 30 October 2026 and the publication of the new lists is scheduled for 1 January 2027.

Interested candidates can access the FIFA recruitment portal via the following address:

The NFF also advised potential applicants to contact its secretariat for further guidance.

The federation’s appeal is for qualified Nigerian legal professionals with the necessary experience to contribute to FIFA’s legal and judicial work. For successful candidates, inclusion on the lists would create an opportunity to serve within the international football regulatory system, supporting access to legal representation for eligible individuals or contributing to investigations into potential disciplinary and ethical breaches.

As the October 30 deadline approaches, interested professionals have been encouraged to review the official requirements and complete their applications within the prescribed period.
