Enugu Rangers’ hopes of reaching the group stages of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League ended dashed on Friday after Algerian champions MC Alger overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit to eliminate the Nigerian side with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
MC Alger defeated Rangers 3-0 in the return match in Algiers, scoring three second-half goals to overturn the 2-0 lead the Flying Antelopes had secured in the first match in Abeokuta. Project reports
Chahreddine Boukholda opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Mohamed Saliou Bangoura added a second in the 84th minute. Soufiane Bayazid then scored in injury time to complete the comeback and send the Algerian team to the next stage.
The result brought a painful end to Rangers’ continental campaign, with the Nigerian champions unable to protect the lead they had worked hard to establish on home soil.
MC Alger turned the tables after the break
After losing the first leg 2-0, MC Alger went into Friday’s match needing a good performance in front of their fans to keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
The Algerians approached the second leg with the urgency typical of a team facing elimination, while Rangers traveled to North Africa hoping to defend their lead and secure a place in the group stages.
The first half ended without a goal, leaving the tie tied with both teams returning for the second period.
The turning point finally came in the 58th minute when Boukholda found the net for MC Alger, reducing the overall deficit and giving the hosts renewed confidence that a comeback was possible.
Rangers were now under increasing pressure, as another goal would bring the Algerians level on aggregate and shift the momentum decisively in their favour.
Bangoura delivered the next big blow in the 84th minute, scoring MC Alger’s second goal of the evening. With the aggregate score at 2-2, the match headed towards a tense conclusion, with the next objective set to determine which team would progress.
Bayazid then decided the match in injury time, scoring the goal that completed MC Alger’s 3-0 victory that night and secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
Rangers fail to protect their first-leg lead
The defeat will be particularly painful for Rangers as they had placed themselves in a strong position following an impressive performance in the first leg on 18 October.
The Flying Antelopes defeated MC Alger 2-0 at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Nigeria, despite playing most of the match with 10 men.
Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was sent off in the 13th minute after bringing down an opposing attacker who had passed through on goal. Rangers were forced to regroup early, but remained competitive and frustrated the Algerian hosts.
MC Alger also lost a player to a red card in the second half when Oussama Benhaoua was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The Rangers ultimately took advantage of the more balanced numbers. Kenneth Igboke converted a late penalty before substitute James Emo scored again to give the Nigerian team a two-goal lead heading into the return match.
Those goals had raised hopes that Rangers could secure a place among Africa’s leading clubs in the Champions League group stages. However, the advantage proved insufficient in Algiers, where MC Alger provided the response needed to progress.
Another continental setback for the Nigerian champions
Rangers’ elimination is a setback for Nigerian football, which had been looking to the Enugu team to make an impression in Africa’s premier club competition.
The club entered the match having negotiated the previous qualifying round against AS Sobemap of Benin Republic. That match finished 1-1 on aggregate before Rangers advanced with a 5-4 penalty shootout victory in Lome, Togo.
The first-leg win against MC Alger looked to have put them one step away from the group stage, especially after they had shown resilience by playing with a numerical disadvantage for much of the match.
The return match, however, highlighted the difficulty of defending an overall advantage away from home against a determined opponent. MC Alger capitalized on their chances in the second half, while Rangers failed to find the goal that could have eased the pressure or changed the course of the match.
The defeat means Rangers will not participate in the group stages of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
Historical echoes of the 1976 meeting
The result is also reminiscent of the historic meeting between the two clubs in the semi-final of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rangers had won the first leg 2–0, but MC Alger responded with a 3–0 victory in the return leg to advance and ultimately win the continental title.
Fifty years later, the Algerian team repeated the same sequence of results against the Nigerian club, first losing 2-0 and then winning 3-0 at home.
The parallel adds another painful dimension to Rangers’ elimination, especially as the Nigerian team had entered the second leg with the same two-goal lead that MC Alger overturned in the previous match.
For the Algerians, the result represents a successful recovery from a difficult first leg and keeps alive their ambition to compete among Africa’s elite clubs.
The rangers must now regroup
For Rangers, the focus will be on recovering from disappointment and refocusing on the domestic campaign.
The club will have to evaluate the reasons for Algiers’ collapse, in particular how the team managed the second half after conceding the first goal.
Their performance in Abeokuta showed that they could compete with the Algerian champions, but in the end it was the second leg that decided the tie. At this level, a promising first leg result must be followed by the discipline and concentration needed to get the job done in two games.
MC Alger, meanwhile, advance after a dramatic comeback that underlines the unpredictable nature of continental football.
For Rangers and their fans, the 3-0 defeat will be difficult to accept after the team worked so hard to establish a two-goal lead. Their Champions League journey is over and the challenge now is to turn disappointment into motivation for the rest of the season.
