The Federal Character Commission (FCC) has called for the immediate suspension of the recruitment exercise of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) over alleged violations of the Federal Character Principles.
The commission said the exercise should be stopped to allow for a thorough investigation into allegations relating to the recruitment process, particularly the reported exclusion of candidates who had completed the required steps.
FCC Financial Services Committee Chairman Abdulwasiu Bawa-Allah said the commission, which has the constitutional mandate to ensure compliance with the principle of federal character in federal appointments, was not invited to monitor the Customs recruitment exercise.
He described the development as a major concern, stressing that the commission’s involvement is necessary to ensure compliance with the principle of fair representation in federal institutions.
The principle of federal character aims to ensure that appointments in federal institutions reflect the diversity of Nigeria and prevent the domination of public institutions by people from a few states or sections of the country.
Bawa-Allah also expressed concern over the alleged exclusion of hundreds of candidates who appeared in the published final results and who had completed screening, documentation and medical tests.
According to him, despite successfully passing these stages, the interested candidates were not invited to the training. It said the circumstances surrounding their exclusion require urgent clarification and investigation, especially since the candidates have already undergone the prescribed stages of the recruitment process.
The FCC official also said the commission’s efforts to engage the Customs Service on the issue were treated with contempt.
He said the development left the commission with no option but to call for the immediate suspension of the recruitment exercise pending a thorough investigation.
The FCC is expected to determine, among other issues, whether the recruiting process complied with federal requirements and whether the selection and exclusion of applicants was conducted according to established procedures.
