The African Democratic Congress (ADC-PCC) Presidential Campaign Council on Wednesday accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Sokoto state government of alleged complicity in an attack on its women in the Sokoto metropolis, in which their branded campaign truck was seized.

In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity
ADC-PCC, Kola Ologbondiyan, women were ambushed during a peaceful campaign activity by thugs allegedly armed with dangerous weapons, who harassed them and seized their campaign vehicle.

One of the victims said that despite drawing the attention of security agencies to the incident, no significant intervention was made.

The statement read: “We drew the attention of security agencies to the incident and they did nothing.”

The victim further alleged that the attackers had demanded ₦1 million, threatening to burn the truck if the sum was not paid.

“We had to pay part of the money in cash and transfer the balance to the account they provided to us before the truck was handed over to us,” he said, expressing concern that the incident would take place in the presence of the police without any action against the offenders.

In reaction, Ologbondiyan condemned the alleged attack, describing it as a serious threat to democratic participation, especially women’s involvement in politics.

He called on security agencies to fulfill their constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, regardless of political affiliation, and immediately investigated the incident, arrested the perpetrators and ensured their prosecution.

“Our party will not stand on the sidelines and watch our members being attacked,” Ologbondiyan warned.

The ADC-PCC’s director of media and publicity also warned political actors against recruiting and deploying thugs to intimidate opponents, warning that such practices could have dangerous consequences beyond election periods.

“We have all witnessed how recruited criminals transform after every election season, turning into banditry, robbery and terrorism. Let us not encourage today what will hunt us tomorrow, as we are already seeing now,” he said.

The Council urged the Inspector General of Police and the Sokoto State Commissioner of Police to investigate the allegations, hold those responsible accountable and ensure safety and a level playing field for all political parties.

He stressed that political differences must never become a justification for violence, intimidation or the illegal seizure of campaign property.
