Owerri-based Heartland FC will begin their campaign in the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season when they host Crown FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri on Sunday, November 1.

The Owerri-based side will bank on the experience of their technical director, Emmanuel Amunike, as they seek a strong start to their campaign and pursue a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Amunike, a former African Footballer of the Year and one of Nigeria’s most highly regarded footballers, brings with him a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching career at Heartland’s technical department.

The former Zamalek of Egypt player also played for FC Barcelona and FC Porto during his illustrious playing career. He remains the last African player to win the African Footballer of the Year award, having claimed the honor in 1994.

After hanging up his boots, Amunike ventured into the world of coaching and made his mark by leading Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to victory at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.

He also coached Tanzania’s senior national team, leading the Taifa Stars to qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, their first appearance at the continental tournament in 39 years.

His vast experience is expected to be invaluable to Heartland as the club seeks to rebuild and regain its place among Nigeria’s elite football clubs.

Sunday’s match against Crown FC, scheduled for 4pm at Dan Anyiam Stadium, will give Naze Millionaires their first opportunity to translate their preparation into a positive result.

With the Nigeria National League serving as their route to promotion to the NPFL, Heartland will be keen to make their home advantage count in front of their fans.

The club’s ambition is reflected in its campaign slogan,
One Team, One Dream, Heartland!”, as the players, coaching staff and fans look forward to a successful season.

For Amunike, his role as Technical Director will be crucial in providing technical direction and helping to set the standards required for the club to achieve its objectives.

Heartland supporters will be hoping the former Nigeria international’s presence in the coaching department will contribute to a successful campaign as the Owerri side begin their journey back to the top flight.
