The Flamencos focus attention on the quarterfinal battle with Venezuela

Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan were the difference for Nigeria on Thursday as the Flamingos defeated Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026, Sports247 reports.

Coach Akeem Busari and his girls will now turn their attention to a clash against Venezuela in the quarterfinals, with the understanding that their next opponent surprised title favorites Germany 1-0 on Wednesday.

However, Busari’s side will be buoyed by the euphoria of Thursday’s victory as the Flamingos put on another exciting display of attacking talent to overtake the Mexicans, with Umejiaku opening the scoring in the 40th minute and Dunstan then scoring midway through the second half.

Mexico pulled back 10 minutes into added time to set up a tense finale, but Busari’s charges held firm to book their place in the last eight and now turn their attention to how to beat Venezuela as they continue their quest to better Nigeria’s bronze medal finish at the 2022 edition in India.
