Former Heartland FC captain and member of the club’s current coaching set-up, Chinedu Efugh, has called for a revival of the winning mentality that defined the glorious years of the Owerri team as the club prepares for the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

Efugh, who captained Naze Millionaires during their remarkable 2011/2012 season, recalled how the club won back-to-back FA Cups and three other trophies, recording an impressive haul of five titles in two years.

Reflecting on the historic achievement, Efugh described the period as one built on hard work, determination and collective commitment.

It was a thing of joy. It wasn’t easy. It was hard work and determination,” he recalled.

The former captain called on members of his previous generation of players to take responsibility for restoring the Heartland’s winning tradition, urging them to bring back the unity, commitment and team spirit that characterized their successful era.

Efugh also praised the club’s Technical Director, Coach Emmanuel Amunike, for his sacrifices, dedication and commitment to the growth and development of Heartland.

He expressed confidence that with Amunike’s leadership, collective determination and the right team spirit, the club could make the 2026/2027 NNL season a success.

The former captain, who now contributes to the club’s technical structure, also appealed to Heartland fans around the world to continue to pray for the team and believe in its ambitions.

Let’s just pray for ourselves and continue to believe. We will make them proud,” he assured.

Heartland’s immediate ambition is to secure a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with the club hoping to draw inspiration from its glorious past as it begins another journey to top-flight football.
