‘Leadership is based on seniority,’ Rivers caucus in House of Representatives disowns colleague over comments on Ugochinyere

The Rivers State Caucus in the House of Representatives has disowned one of its members, Dumnamene Deekor, as its spokesperson.

The Leader of the Rivers State Caucus in the House of Representatives, Awaji-Inombek Abiante, who made the clarification in a statement on Friday in Abuja, rejected the statement directed at the lawmaker.

Deekor in his statement called for sanctions against the G-60 parliamentary coordinator, Ikenga Ugochinyere.

However, Abiante said Deekor was never instructed to speak on behalf of the caucus.

He said Rivers’ caucus leadership in the Green Chamber has always been based on seniority.

He added that second-term lawmakers cannot lead the caucus if there are more senior lawmakers.

The statement read: β€œThe Rivers Caucus in the House of Representatives read with dismay, a statement purportedly issued by the member, representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, Deekor.

β€œThe statement calls for disciplinary action against the G-60 Coordinator of Parliamentarians in the Green Chamber, Ugochinyere for his position on troubling issues in government.

β€œWe refuse to collectively agree with Deekor’s self-serving stance because he was never selected by the Rivers caucus to speak on our behalf.”

Abiante emphasized that Deekor, who is a second term member of parliament, cannot boast of being the caucus leader amidst third and fourth term members of parliament.
