The Nigerian Governors Forum has reiterated its commitment to guarantee better minimum wages for Nigerian workers, following a meeting that lasted until early Thursday morning.
The governors previously rejected the Federal Government’s proposal of N62,000, citing financial constraints, but have now assured labor leaders that they are dedicated to reaching a mutually acceptable solution.
Based on this assurance meeting, the governors did not provide any figure they deemed acceptable after rejecting the federal government’s proposal of N62,000.
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, the governors acknowledged the importance of the World Bank-Nigeria Scaling Up Project for Women and emphasized the need for its implementation at the state level.

“The forum received a presentation from the Minister of Women’s Affairs on the World Bank-Nigeria Scale-up Project for Women, along with other activities of the ministry. Members noted the importance of the project and stressed the need to implement it at the state level as originally planned, since states are the primary beneficiaries of the project,” the communique said.
The governors also acknowledged the work and contribution of the Ministry of Women Affairs, stating, “The governors acknowledged the work and contribution of the Ministry of Women Affairs in promoting gender equality, empowering women and advancing social development across Nigeria.”
Regarding the minimum wage, the communique stated, “The forum discussed the new National Minimum Wage. The governors agreed to continue to engage with key stakeholders to reach a mutually agreeable solution. We remain dedicated to this process and guarantee that better wages will result from ongoing negotiations.”
The governors’ reassurance may indicate a shift in their position, as they seek to avoid potential strikes by unions. Organized labor has consistently demanded wages of N250,000, a figure that governors have so far failed to meet.
The communique also highlighted the governors’ support for the President’s Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee, which seeks to implement fiscal policy and tax reform that will impact local level government.
“Members received a briefing from Mr Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee. He highlighted the progress achieved regarding ongoing Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform. “He requested input and support from His Majesty on a number of proposals that would have a direct impact on regional level government,” the communique read.
The governors pledged their support to the Committee, stating, “Members pledged their support to the Committee to ensure the successful implementation of these reforms and to work closely together to address any challenges that may arise.”
While labor leaders have expressed skepticism about the governors’ promises, the assurances could signal a potential breakthrough in the ongoing negotiations. While the governors continue to engage with key stakeholders, Nigerian workers await concrete results that will improve their wages and working conditions.
