Aliko Dangote University is facing closure following a power outage despite partial payments

The Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, faces potential closure after the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) cut off its electricity supply even though the university had paid N20 million of its N60 million monthly electricity bill.

This sudden disconnection has plunged the university into darkness, posing significant challenges to its operations, particularly in providing water to the campus, according to Prof. Abdulkadir Dambazau, Dean of Student Affairs.

Speaking to reporters in Wudil on Monday, Prof. Dambazau revealed that the university administration is now considering three options amid the crisis: closing the university, advising students not to return after the semester break, or requiring them to live without electricity.

“The management has been diligent in meeting its financial obligations, but KEDCO’s decision to increase our monthly bill from N16-17 million to N50-60 million, along with an accumulated debt of N248 million, has put us in a dire situation,” Prof. .

He further sought help from the government, philanthropists and concerned citizens to avert complete closure of the university, while stressing that the institution cannot operate effectively without uninterrupted power supply.

“The university community hopes that with the support of stakeholders, we can overcome this challenge and continue to provide quality education,” concluded Prof. Dambazau.
