King Charles officially appoints Keir Starmer as British Prime Minister

Labour leader Keir Starmer was officially appointed as Britain’s new Prime Minister by King Charles III in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday.

A photo released by the palace captured the moment the monarch shook hands with Starmer, marking a transition after his party’s landslide victory in the general election. Earlier, King Charles had accepted the resignation of Conservative leader Rishi Sunak.

“The King received His Holiness Sir Keir Starmer MP today and asked him to form a new government.

“Sir Keir accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed her hand at his inauguration as Prime Minister and Head of the Treasury,” the palace said in a statement.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu also congratulated Starmer on his party’s electoral success in the UK general election.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu highlighted Starmer’s determination and leadership throughout his tenure as leader of the opposition and now as head of government.

The president praised Labour’s ability to reform, mobilise and secure victory after 14 years, underlining Starmer’s leadership qualities.
