As the search for a new coach for Nigeria’s senior national team continues, former team manager Jose Peseiro has been linked with a surprise return to the role he left in February. Own goal Nigeria.comreports.
Peseiro left the team when his contract as coach expired, despite having led the team to their best result in the African Cup of Nations since 2013, when they won the competition. They were beaten 1-2 by hosts Ivory Coast in the final.
He was replaced by one of his assistants, Finidi George, but after a disappointing performance in the last two World Cup qualifying games, where they drew 1–1 with South Africa before losing 1–2 to Benin Republic, Finidi was relieved of his role as coach of the team.
The NFF in a statement released after both games said they are looking for an expatriate coach, who will coach the team for the AFCON qualifiers starting in September, it seems Peseiro’s return is on the agenda.
According to Gerald Baloyi of local agency Vodia Sports International Management, Peseiro has been offered to South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) giants Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Portuguese joins Frenchman Patrice Carteron and former Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer who have also been linked with Sundowns.
However, Baloyi said that even though Peseiro is linked with the Sundowns coaching job, he could return to the Super Eagles job.
“Yes, Vodia Sports International Management offered Jose Peseiro to Sundowns, although Nigeria’s national teams are interested in bringing him in to take control again,” Gerald Baloyi told KickOff.
