12 students killed in car crash in South Africa

At least 12 primary school children died in a car crash in South Africa on Wednesday.

The country’s road transport officials told reporters that a minibus carrying children to school overturned and caught fire after colliding on the N14 highway near Merafong, about 70 kilometres west of Johannesburg.

The minibus driver was also found dead.

South African authorities said the victims were burned beyond recognition while seven children were injured in the crash.

However, officials were initially unable to provide any information regarding the children’s ages.

Police officers have been deployed to the scene to investigate the circumstances behind the accident.

Gauteng Provincial Education Minister Matome Chiloane expressed sadness over the incident.

โ€œThe loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community,โ€ the minister said.
