The Loyola College Old Boys Association has announced its 70th Anniversary Conference, scheduled for July 19, 2024 at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs.
The Association said the major event included a keynote address by Mr Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for Economy.
:The conference, titled: “Rebuilding the Nigerian Economy for Sustainable Growth and Investment”, aims to provide in-depth perspectives on the current administration’s initiatives to re-energise the economy for sustainable growth and investment.
The event will begin at 11:00 am at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, 13/15, Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
“The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will be the special guest of honour at the event.
“The conference will also feature a distinguished panel of experts, including: Dr. Doyin Salami, former Chief Economic Adviser to the former President, Mrs. Oyeyimika Adeboye, Managing Director of Cadbury Nigeria PLC, and Dr. Olumide Adedeji, a former student of the school and a prominent banker and financial expert.
“The Chairman of the Day will be Ambassador Joe Keshi, a former student of the school and former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Mr Laolu Akande, special advisor to the former vice president and a former student of the school, will be the moderator of the event.
“This event promises to be enlightening and engaging, bringing together some of the brightest minds in the fields of economics, finance and manufacturing to explore strategies for sustainable growth and investment in Nigeria.
“The anniversary conference will also include the launch and presentation of a new book titled ‘Loyola Stories,’ which chronicles the school’s founding, early years, the school’s evolution over the years, as well as reflections from several alumni spanning many generations,” the association said.
Loyola College, Ibadan was founded by the Roman Catholic Mission in 1953.
The school admitted its first 19 founding students in 1954, with former Governor of Oyo State, the late Alhaji Lamidi “Lam” Adesina and the late Apostle (Dr.) Hayford Alile (OFR) on the admission list.
Since the late 1950s, Loyola College has produced extraordinary individuals who have made great strides in various fields of human endeavor and have become great role models who have shaped and influenced various aspects of Nigerian society and the world at large.
Among the illustrious sons of Loyola College Ibadan are: former Governor of Oyo State, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adesina, former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), former Executive Director/CEO of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, late Apostle (Dr.) Hayford Alile (OFR), renowned political economist and public affairs analyst, Professor Pat Utomi, an accomplished oncologist, Professor Akin Abayomi, the current Lagos State Commissioner for Health, and the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II.
The Loyola College Old Boys Association has invited all alumni and key stakeholders in the Nigerian economy to attend this momentous celebration and thought-provoking conference.
Other activities planned to commemorate the 70th anniversary include an essay competition, talent hunt and career debate for students, sports competitions, a cocktail and variety evening and a gala dinner in Ibadan on August 10, 2024.
The guest speaker at the gala dinner will be Reverend Professor Tony Akinwale, Pioneer and Vice Chancellor of Dominican University.
He will speak on the topic “Rebuilding the Education System in Nigeria: The Role of the Private Sector”.
The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde (FNSE), will be the special guest of honour at the gala dinner.
The program also includes the dedication ceremony of a multipurpose building for Alumni, a project commemorating the 70th anniversary.
