Kenyan President William Ruto dissolves cabinet amid ongoing protests

In a surprise move, Kenya’s President William Ruto on Thursday dismissed his entire cabinet, including the attorney general, effective immediately.

The decision follows weeks of protests against a controversial tax bill, which resulted in at least 30 deaths and ultimately led to the bill’s withdrawal.

Ruto linked his decision to the need for “broad-based governance” and promised to engage in wide-ranging consultations with various sectors and political formations to achieve this goal.

The move is seen as an attempt to address growing discontent and restore stability to the country.

The cabinet dissolution does not affect Vice President Rigathi Gachagua, who cannot be legally dismissed, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who also serves as foreign minister.

The principal secretary will oversee the ministry’s affairs until a new cabinet is appointed.
