LP warns NLC not to interfere, confirms Obi, Abure as leaders

The Labour Party (LP), on Monday, issued a stern warning to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warning it against involving the party and its leadership in political manoeuvres aimed at satisfying their sponsors.

The warning was given by Marcel Ngogbehei, Director-General of LP Mobilization and Integration Directorate, in a statement in Abuja. Ngogbehei was responding to a statement attributed to the National Transition Committee of the NLC, which allegedly misrepresented Julius Abure as the former LP national chairman and advised stakeholders to boycott the upcoming congresses in Anambra, Imo, Delta and the Federal Capital Territory.

Ngogbehei described the NLC circular as “childish, malicious and misleading,” and asserted that the NLC has no authority to constitute a transition committee for a political party in Nigeria. He reaffirmed Peter Obi as the presidential flagbearer and Julius Abure as the LP national chairman.

Ngogbehei criticized the NLC’s actions, accusing them of acting as a tool to weaken opposition structures and divert attention from important issues affecting Nigerian workers and citizens. He urged the NLC to prioritize constructive engagement with the government to protect workers’ rights rather than meddling in political party affairs.

“The NLC is positioning itself as a disruptive force, which seems to be in line with the government’s efforts to dismantle the opposition structure,” Ngogbehei said. “Instead of learning from previous leadership, like Oshiomhole, and championing the interests of workers, they are engaging in unwarranted political interference.”

He concluded by advising the NLC to respect the reconciliation efforts led by Peter Obi or seek legal recourse if they had grievances, stressing that destructive actions would only benefit the current government at the expense of the real opposition.

The LP’s stance underlines their commitment to maintaining internal integrity and rejecting external interference in their party affairs.
