The banned Igbo separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Thursday hinted that it might resort to violence if its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, was not released from detention.
The group sounded a warning when they echoed John F. Kennedy’s popular adage that “Those who make peaceful change impossible, make violent change inevitable.”
They threatened the Nigerian government with serious consequences if anything happens to its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since his arrest in Kenya in 2021.
The group raised the alarm following revelations on Wednesday by Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, who said the IPOB leader was seriously ill and should be released to receive adequate medical attention.
After a mandatory visit to Kanu at the Directorate of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja, Ejimakor put up a post on his X account that read:
“Today, DSS finally allowed Doctor MAZI NNAMDI KANU to examine him. The Doctor’s initial report indicates a complex medical condition that requires #MNK to be taken to hospital for a more detailed diagnosis. This will follow the report that will be sent to DG-DSS by the Doctor.”

However, in a statement by IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group called on the government to release Kanu unconditionally to prevent what it called a growing storm.
“The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) led by the resolute leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu, once again calls for the unconditional release of our leader from the DSS solidarity confinement over his deteriorating health condition,” IPOB said.
“The Nigerian government is deliberately provoking IPOB by refusing to release our leader even though the Nigerian and International Courts have ordered his unconditional release.
“IPOB wishes to reiterate that the life of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is under threat in the DSS isolation cell in Abuja.
“We continue to call on the Nigerian government to release our leader as international and local legal bodies have ordered his release.
“Many prominent Nigerian personalities, religious, traditional and political leaders, including 50 members of the National Assembly, have also called for his release.
“But the Tinubu government has refused to listen to the voice of reason by refusing to release Mazi Kanu, just like its notorious predecessor, the Buhari government.
“The Tinubu government has dropped similar cases of terrorism and treason charges against two Yoruba activists and a Fulani militia leader.

“In the case of an Igbo man, unarmed freedom activist Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the same Tinubu government, has vehemently refused to release him.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has local and international court rulings ordering his release, unlike other cases that were dismissed by the federal government without any court ruling.
“We are outlining all these injustices to show that the Federal Government of Nigeria is deliberately provoking the anger of IPOB and Ndigbo.
“IPOB has maintained a non-violent approach in the Biafran struggle despite the Nigerian government’s abuses against Biafran activists.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is seriously ill and must be released unconditionally from the DSS solidarity confinement so that he can treat himself before something unexpected and unimaginable happens to him.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health is deteriorating daily in DSS isolation cell due to the nature of his health issues.
“IPOB again urges President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Attorney General, Fatai Fagbemi, to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu so that he can go and treat himself before it is too late.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and members of IPOB have been persecuted for over a decade by the Nigerian State for Biafran self-determination.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was kidnapped and extraordinarily transferred to Nigeria and has been held in solitary confinement for over 3 years.
“Although no court in Nigeria has found him guilty, he is still persecuted by the fanatical Nigerian tribal government.
“President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, please be aware that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is sick and something bad could happen to him if he is not released.
“Nothing should happen to him in the DSS solitary confinement cell in Abuja. As John F. Kennedy said, “Those who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable.”
