Nigerian government again holds mass trials of terror suspects

The Federal Government on Wednesday said it had resumed mass trials of people reported to be involved in terrorism and other suspected heinous crimes against the Nigerian state.

A statement from National Counterterrorism Center spokesman Abu Michael noted that the continued trial was โ€œin line with the governmentโ€™s commitment to promoting social justice by upholding a transparent administrative system.โ€

โ€œThis ongoing trial, which is in line with the International Criminal Justice system, is being managed by the Federal High Court of Nigeria with the Complex Cases Working Group (CCG) of the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation in collaboration with other key stakeholders under the coordination and supervision of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

โ€œMore than 300 suspects are being tried by 5 prominent judges serving in 5 courts and Chambers formed to expedite the administration of justice in ongoing trials in terrorism cases and other related cases in the country.

โ€œThe trial involved many stakeholders, CCG prosecutors and legal counsel from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON).

โ€œPreviously, more than 800 case files were reviewed, and charges were prepared for efficient prosecution to ensure justice is served appropriately.

โ€œBetween 2017 and 2018, trials have so far resulted in 163 convictions, 882 acquittals and 5 releases. Innocent suspects are being de-radicalized, involved in lucrative businesses and efforts to reintegrate them are ongoing.

โ€œNCTC-ONSA is working hard with relevant authorities in fulfilling its mandate and to enhance the efforts of the current administration in realizing good governance and a just society,โ€ the statement said.
