‘A homeboy needs to lead Edo effectively,’ Shaibu endorsed APC’s Okpebholo ahead of governorship election

Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, on Sunday, declared his support for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21 election in the state, Monday Okpebholo.

Shaibu, who was impeached in April following a dispute with Governor Godwin Obaseki over his succession bid, spoke at Father’s Day celebrations in Benin City.

He said Okpebholo embodies the “homebody” qualities needed to lead Edo State effectively.

The former deputy governor has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, as a product of godfatherism which he said has been wiped out from the political landscape of Edo State.

Shaibu commended former Governor Adams Oshiomhole for championing the fight against godfatherism and revealed that he had learned valuable political strategies from Governor Obaseki during their fight against godfatherism in the 2020 elections.

He said: “I am a very good learner and learning is the most important thing in our life and we should keep learning until we die. Governor Obaseki says he has the right to support whoever he wants to support, but he also forgets that he has no right to stop anyone from supporting whoever they want to support. So, it is also my right to decide who I want to support.

“I would support a homeboy. I am running for governor of Edo State because I need a government that goes back to the home, someone who understands our plight and someone who understands what the people are feeling.

“We don’t want outsiders. We’ve experimented with outsiders and it didn’t work, so this time we wanted a homeboy. We have only two homeboys in the major political parties; one in the Labor Party and another in the All Progressives Congress.

“I chose to follow homeboy in APC. The people they are showcasing in the PDP are outsiders and we also agree that there is no more godfatherism in Edo. The person being paraded by the PDP is Obaseki’s godson and there is no way his godson can become governor of Edo State again.”
