The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the governors elected on the Popular Democratic Party platform (PDP) for having held a political meeting in the state of Zamfara barely days after armed men have triggered mortal attacks on state communities.
No less than 24 people were killed, another 16 wounds and at least 144 residents kidnapped in the last wave of violence in different areas of the local government of Zamfara.
But despite the tragic accidents, the forum of the Governors of the PDP converged on Gusau, the capital of the State, on Saturday 23 August, drawing indignation from opposition parties and groups of civil society.
In a declaration issued on Sunday by its secretary of national advertising, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the action of the governors of the PDP as a “mockery of the victims” and an performance of “cold insensitivity to the pain of the Nigerian normal”.
“Instead of gathering around their colleague to help stop the orgy of murders, the governors have chosen to stage a political jamboree on the scene of the mass murder itself.
“The images of the governors of the PDP who smile for the cameras in complete ceremonial clothes, while the land still stinks of blood, are completely out of place and unpleasant”, has read the declaration.
The ADC also accused the two dominant political parties of Nigeria, the housekeeper of all progressives (APC) and the PDP – to give priority to the power games on the well -being of citizens.
“This act alone underlines an important fact: neither the APC nor the PDP incuratively afflicted people and their suffering. Their only obsession is power and politics,” added Abdullahi.
The party further reproached President Bola Tinubu for what called the “warm response” of his government to the growing security crisis in the states of Zamfara and Katsina.
“The silence of the president in front of this level of carnage is deeply worrying. The Nigerians deserve more than indifference; they deserve the leadership that protects life and restores hope,” said the ADC.
Zamfara, one of the worst stroke of bandits in recent years, has continued to suffer repeated waves of mass murders, kidnappings and movements despite several military operations launched in the region.
