Nigeria’s Minister of Electric Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is preparing to step down from his post after receiving approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue his ambition to become governor of Oyo State.
The planned resignation came after a meeting held on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Adelabu presented a detailed report on his performance in the power sector over the last two and a half years.
According to a statement issued by Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the session featured a comprehensive review of the reforms and policy framework introduced under the minister’s chairmanship.
A key highlight of the meeting was Adelabu’s presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan, both of which are designed to reposition Nigeria’s electricity sector for long-term sustainability.
The statement also confirmed that the minister will soon vacate his post as he shifts his focus to his political ambitions.
It read, “In light of these developments, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign from his position as Minister of Power in the coming days.”
Giving an overview of the timing, Tunji explained that the decision was carefully crafted to ensure stability in the sector before the minister leaves office.
“The timing of his resignation reflects his commitment to address key sectoral challenges and ensure the continuity of ongoing reforms before he leaves office. This primarily includes efforts to stabilize the sector following the recent decline in power generation due to limited gas supplies to power plants, ongoing pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers, as well as the need to obtain Presidential approval for his resignation plans and gubernatorial aspirations in Oyo State,” Tunji said.

“During the meeting, the minister outlined key achievements recorded under his leadership, including efforts to stabilize power generation, strengthen transmission capacity, and implement reforms aimed at improving efficiency and service delivery across the power sector value chain,” the statement said.
Further details reveal that the policy presentation also includes a Medium-Long Term Integrated Resource Plan, which is intended to ensure continuity and continuity in the sector beyond its tenure.
Explaining the importance of NIEP, the statement added, “NIEP is a comprehensive policy framework designed to guide the sustainable development of Nigeria’s electricity sector. NIEP provides a long-term roadmap to achieve energy security, expand electricity access, integrate renewable energy, and build a more resilient and efficient electricity sector.”
President Tinubu is said to have expressed satisfaction with the minister’s performance, especially in laying the foundation for long-term reforms.
“President Tinubu commended the Minister for his dedication and progress achieved, especially in laying a strong policy foundation for the transformation of the electricity sector. The President also gave his approval and blessing to the Minister to realize his ambition to become governor,” explained Tunji.
