The President of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation, Adewale Adeniyi, has challenged the country’s wrestlers to aim for the podium at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria.

Speaking in Abuja before the team’s departure, Adeniyi expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and stressed the importance of representing Nigeria with pride on the international stage. “Competing under the national flag is both an honor and a duty. You are ambassadors of Nigeria, and with that comes great expectations,” he said, urging the athletes to stay focused and motivated throughout the competition.

He added that adequate preparation has been prioritized despite the financial challenges, highlighting the federation’s decision to organize a training camp. “Despite limited resources, we made deliberate efforts to organize a suitable training camp due to its critical role in performance,” Adeniyi noted, while assuring the athletes of continued support and well-being.

“This is an opportunity to achieve national recognition and leave a lasting legacy. Moments like this are rare and it is important to make the most of them,” he added.

Nigeria will be represented by 18 wrestlers across multiple weight classes, supported by a team of coaches including Akuh Purity, Blessing Oborududu and Agberekeme Areh. The championships are scheduled to run from April 27 to May 2 and will feature Under-17, Under-20 and Senior events.
