Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has tasked the Senate Committee on Telecommunications to investigate DStv’s billing structure, raising concerns over what he described as a potentially unfair system affecting millions of Nigerian subscribers.
The directive was issued during the plenary session, where the Senate President expressed strong reservations over the current subscription model of the pay-TV provider in Nigeria. Akpabio explicitly questioned why a company operating a “pay-as-you-go” model in South Africa would maintain a rigid and fixed subscription system in Nigeria, regardless of usage or service interruptions.
He noted that such disparity raises critical concerns about consumer protection, fairness and regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s telecommunications and digital services sector. According to him, Nigerians should not be subjected to a system that appears less flexible and potentially exploitative than that obtainable in other jurisdictions where the same company operates.
The Senate President then instructed the Telecommunications Commission to carry out a comprehensive investigation into DStv’s billing framework, including its pricing model, service delivery models and compliance with consumer rights standards. The commission is expected to report back with recommendations that could lead to reforms aimed at protecting Nigerian consumers from arbitrary or excessive billing.
Akpabio’s intervention has already sparked conversations among subscribers and industry observers, many of whom have long advocated for a more flexible billing approach, particularly in a country where economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on families.
The outcome of the Senate investigation could mark a turning point in the way pay-TV services are structured in Nigeria, potentially forcing operators to adopt more consumer-friendly models or face regulatory consequences.
