For 13 years, the Nigeria Pitch Awards has remained one of the most enduring platforms to recognize excellence in Nigerian football. At the center of its extraordinary journey is its founder and president, Dr. Shina Philips, an entrepreneur, FIFA-licensed football agent and sports administrator whose determination has kept the prestigious awards alive despite numerous challenges.
Described as a man of many parts, Phillips founded the awards to bring credibility, transparency and global standards to the recognition of Nigerian sporting talent. The platform relies on independent votes cast by sports editors and journalists nationwide, a system that has kept it fair and respected.
Despite having humble beginnings and facing severe financial challenges, including selling personal belongings to keep the prizes alive without a sponsor, Phillips has weathered the storm. While many contemporary awards have faded into oblivion, the Pitch Awards have grown stronger every year.
Over the course of thirteen editions, the awards have celebrated stars such as Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala, Alex Iwobi and Odion Ighalo. At the 12th edition in Lagos, Phillips introduced new categories such as the Emerging Star award to support youth football.
Beyond football, Phillips is involved in safety analytics and youth development and has broadened his vision with initiatives such as the Africa LAMPS Awards to recognize talent across all sectors.
He also survived the COVID-19 emergency in 2020 without missing an edition, a feat many have described as remarkable.
Speaking about the essence of the awards, Phillips said: “This gathering is more than an occasion for trophies, photographs and applause. It is a celebration of talent, sacrifice, discipline, resilience and excellence.”
An outspoken advocate for accountability and federal sports reform, Phillips insists that awards are not simply ceremonial but part of the architecture that motivates young players and rebuilds the nation’s soccer ecosystem.
