The inaugural edition of the Under 13 football tournament of IMo State closed in Amato, with the sponsor, the archbishop Prof. Amb. Lawrence Luba, greets the event as a historic milestone for the development of basic football in the state.
In his closing speech, Archbishop Luba expressed gratitude to God for making the tournament a reality, describing it as the fulfillment of a dream to provide young talents with a platform to shine.
He praised the special guest of honor, Hrh Eze Michael Utoko Ogbenna and his traditional advice, as well as coaches, referees, parents and organizers for their collective roles in making competition a success. Special praise went to the tournament coordinator, partner Chris Onyedika, who described as the “brain behind the tournament”, for the management of the event professionally from the beginning to the end.
The beloved Academy FC emerged samples of the inaugural competition, defeating a strong opposition to affect their names in history. Chika FC of ORji and Silver Sports Academy, Mbaise, arrived second and third respectively, with Archbishop Luba who declared them “champions in the spirit” for their lively performances.
The cleric stressed that the tournament was “only the beginning”, revealing the plans to expand the next edition to cover multiple communities throughout the IMO state, with stronger scouting connections to expose talents discovered to professional opportunities.
“It is my vision that this platform will produce the next Kanu, Amuneke or Iheanacho from the state of imo,” he said.
By encouraging young players, Archbishop Luba urged them to remain disciplined, to respect their parents and coaches and never stop dreaming, stressing that their talent combined with character would open the doors to global opportunities.
The archbishop officially declared the closure of the Maiden Edition, promising that the second edition would be “bigger, better and more impact”.
