Asuu reduces poor pension packages for university lecturers

The University Academic Staff Union (ASUU) has expressed concern about the poor pension package for retired members.

President Asuu, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, spoke at a press conference on Thursday in JOS.

He regretted that the introduction of the contribution pension scheme in 2024 had a negative impact on the welfare package of retired lecturers.

Piwuna said: “Our retired colleagues continue to bear the burden of unpopular government policy, which manifests in inflation that runs fast and rising electricity costs, transportation, housing, food, and medicines, among others.

“We are not happy with this situation, where those who fight for the fortune of our university will be treated with insult.

“The situation in which a senior academic, who served for more than 40 years, ended with a monthly salary of N150,000 unacceptable in current economic reality.

“Many of our retired colleagues are struggling against chronic conditions, caring for their partners, caring for their children and grandchildren with trivial quantities as retirement.”

President Asuu stressed that the position of the union for the administration of university -based pension funds was to overcome the existing anomalies.

He urged the federal government to reverse the trend towards a better welfare package for retired lecturers.
