ASUU urges the Nigerian government to remove universities from IPPIS, fulfilling other agreements

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has urged the Federal Government to fulfill its promise of removing its members from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Chairman of ASUU, Federal University, Lokoja (FUL) branch, Dr. Joshua Silas, made the call during a protest by union members at the FUL campus in Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State on Tuesday.

Its chairman urged the federal government to carry out renegotiation of the 2009 agreement reached with the national leadership of ASUU to prevent the resumption of suspended industrial action.

The ASUU national leadership several weeks ago threatened to resume the suspended strike in October 2022 over the government’s refusal to honor the agreement reached by both parties.

Silas said: “We are carrying out this protest nationwide as directed by the national body ASUU as a show of solidarity to urge the federal government to immediately meet our demands.

“The government has failed to fulfill our demands regarding the 2009 renegotiation agreement with national body ASUU as promised.

“Many things have been done and the government promised to meet our needs, but from 2009 to 2024 until now, there has been no action because the government did not keep the agreement.

“We called off the last strike in October 2022 in the hope that the government would resolve all outstanding issues, but as of today, June 25, 2024, no action has been taken.

“This action aims to draw the attention of the public to become aware and become witnesses that ASUU has been patient enough with the government.

“Enough is enough; This is completely unacceptable as many of our members are dying as a result of the current economic hardship.

“We urge the government to take necessary action as ASUU should not be blamed for any industrial action from now on.”
