Atiku’s visit to Morocco was for a wedding ceremony, not a political meeting — media aide

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s media team has denied claims linking his recent trip to Morocco to political negotiations or coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The clarification was issued on Sunday in Abuja by Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Phrank Shaibu, following widespread speculation regarding the purpose of the former presidential aspirant’s foreign trip.

According to Shaibu, Atiku traveled to Marrakesh to officiate at the wedding ceremony of Cherina and Muna Okey Ezeibe, which took place on Saturday, and stressed that the visit had no political overtones.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, yesterday officiated at the wedding ceremony of Cherina and Muna Okey Ezeibe in the enchanting city of Marrakesh, Morocco, in an extraordinary celebration of love, friendship, family and African unity.

“This event has nothing to do with politics,” the statement read.

Shaibu explained that the ceremony attracted prominent guests, relatives and colleagues from various African countries, and described the gathering as symbolic and culturally significant.

He added that the incident carried personal significance for Atiku because of his long-standing relationship with businessman Okey Ezeibe, the groom’s father.

At the heart of the celebration were the proud parents of the groom, Mr and Mrs Okey Ezeibe, who watched with great joy as their son began a new chapter in life.

“This occasion has special significance considering the longstanding friendship and enduring relationship between Okey Ezeibe and His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, a bond built over many years of mutual respect and friendship.”

The aide also revealed that the bride’s father, Lassina Zerbo, former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, attended the ceremony, highlighting the international and cross-cultural nature of the event.

Shaibu further revealed that Atiku, while greeting the guests at the ceremony, described marriage as “a sacred institution founded on love, sacrifice, patience and mutual respect,” while offering prayers for peace, prosperity and eternal happiness for the newlyweds.

“With the stunning backdrop of Marrakech, this ceremony is not just a union of two individuals, but also a celebration of cross-border friendship, cultural harmony and the timeless values that unite families,” added Shaibu.

The statement comes amid increasing public attention to Atiku’s political activities and consultations among the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku, who is running in the 2023 presidential election as a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, continues to play a prominent role in the ongoing discussions around opposition alliances and political realignment.
