Bode George to Tinubu: Review your policies to address Nigeria’s predicament

Former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, on Thursday urged President Bola Tinubu to review some of his governmentโ€™s policies to bring back smiles on the faces of Nigerians.

George, who spoke at a press conference on the state of the country in Lagos, called on the president to address the problems in the oil and power sectors to get the country out of its predicament.

The former military governor of Ondo State was reacting to the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests organized by some groups of Nigerian citizens to express their frustration over the hardships and other socio-economic challenges caused by the policy initiatives of the Tinubu administration.

He said: “Having been trained by this country and worked for this country, if I see something is not going right and stay silent, I will fail. So, it’s not a matter of fighting.

โ€œOur country Nigeria is in a political and economic intensive care unit.

โ€œSo, we need the right surgeon, a political surgeon and an economic surgeon.

โ€œWe’re talking about people who have been through this before, who should be able to come in and give us a breath of fresh air to get out.

โ€œWe must make Nigerians smile, wherever they live.

โ€œWell, some of us can cope, but what about so many young Nigerians who can’t even eat.โ€

On the oil and gas sector and issues surrounding fuel subsidies, the elder statesman urged President Tinubu to tell the truth to the Nigerian people.

โ€œIn the oil sector, today we hear about fuel subsidies, tomorrow we hear there are no fuel subsidies.

“So what is the truth? We want to know. My perception of the handling of the oil sector in our country is very disappointing,” he added.

The PDP chairman also slammed high electricity tariffs, saying the development had driven many small businesses out of the market.

George, who expressed surprise that none of the 18 gas turbines purchased by former President Olusegun Obasanjo had been switched on, said regular and cost-effective power supply remained the backbone of the economy.

โ€œEven in this office, we spend not less than N3 million a month just for electricity and I wonder how small businesses can survive in this situation,โ€ lamented the former chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

George praised Nigerian youth who started protests against government policies.

“That’s normal, especially in a democratic government. The government should listen to those who elected it.

โ€œGeneration Z is restless, and what is happening in the north is a reflection of the restlessness of young people.

“They have gone to college and graduated. Where is the hope, where is the work, and where is the food? They will definitely react,” he concluded.
