Human rights lawyers, Bulama Bukarti, have expressed disappointed that bandits and terrorists have taken over local governments in northwest.
Bulama, who brought his mind in an interview with BBC Hausa service on Sunday, warned that the new peace meeting held between the bandits and the community in the state of Katsina gave a free platform criminals to display strength and spread fear.
Bukarti, the birth of Yobe, which has become one of the strongest votes against bandits in the north, regretted that the video of heavy armed bandits attended what was supposed to be a peaceful meeting and display dangerous weapons in public, there was no intimidation.
He regretted that regardless of the bandit’s identity revealed, the authorities were reluctant to arrest and make them pay their crime.
“The bandits came out with heavy and dangerous weapons during peace talks, binding them to their bodies, giving speeches, and allowing themselves to be recorded in the video,” Bukarti said.
“They do this intentionally to frighten people. That is precisely terrorism -creating fear to achieve political, religious, or ethnic goals.

“When you see them stepping out with heavy weapons as if they will go to the World War, it is an effort that is taken into account to scare the public and send messages to the Nigerian government that there is nothing to do to them,” Bungarti said.
Lawyers also stressed that possession of such weapons and what the so -called peaceful meeting is illegal under Nigeria’s law.
“This is fully prohibited. Nothing is allowed to have such weapons, let alone display it. Even this peaceful dialogue with terrorists violates the law because there is no legal framework that allows it.
“The public and the government must understand that these meetings are not peace. They are subject to. And more and more terrorists are allowed to show off their weapons, the weaker the country looks at the eyes of citizens.
“If the government feels that it cannot fully protect the community from these attacks, then at least must lead the conversation, determine clear conditions, and ensure that criminals are disarmed and rehabilitated. Leaving citizens to negotiate themselves only strengthen bandits,” Bukarti added.
