Candidate Atiku 2027 can spell the final PDP: Bode George warns

Member of the Democratic People’s Supervisory Board (PDP), Head of Bode George, has issued a sharp anniversary of the possibility of the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the carrier of the party’s flag for the 2027 general election.

Speaking in television politics Channels today on Monday night, George does not make small talk: “If he (Atiku) takes it (PDP ticket), that is the end of this party. If he takes it with manipulation, what is done last time, we will not accept it.”

Atiku, a PDP standard carrier in the 2023 election, has become a repeated figure in the Nigerian political landscape, after fighting for the presidency six times on various political platforms. Despite losing to the President of the Tinubu Soccer who was serving in the last election, Atiku remained politically active, the most recent prominent efforts to lead a coalition of the opposition forces aimed at shifting all the ruling Proppercives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The coalition was launched on March 20, 2025, uniting leading figures including former Governor of State Anambra Peter Obi and former Governor of Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai.

This alliance has banking on the strength of the combined election of Atiku and Obi, who together gathered more than 12 million votes in 2023 beyond the calculation of Tinubu’s victory of more than four million.

But George, an influential voice in PDP, is still not impressed by the Atiku movement. He praised the Governor of the party for keeping away from the coalition and reiterated the need for stability and internal justice.

“I praised our governor for wearing their thinking hat,” he said. “They see through self -esteem from the coalition called this. Atiku has not acted like a leader. A true party leader will step to complete the internal crisis that we face.”

He further argues that the ambition of the President Atiku is not in harmony with the long zoning regulation of PDP. Citing the party’s constitution, George said the President of the rotation remains a principle that cannot be negotiated.

“There are rules – part 7, verse 3C from our constitution clearly stated that after eight years in the north, power must return to the south,” he said. “We have eight years under President Buhari from the north. It’s time for south. Is Atiku from the southwest, south-south, or southeast?”

While he acknowledged the constitutional rights of Atiku to fight under any platform, George insisted that the PDP had to reduce the southern candidate if he hoped to reclaim power in 2027.

“I don’t want Tinubu to come back, but I also don’t want this party to go down because of the ambition of one person. We must present a credible southern candidate that can really unite and revive the PDP.”
